2022 Ford F-150 Lightning vs 2024 Chevy Silverado EV: Comparing Electric Trucks

The best-selling pickup trucks in the United States entered the electric age with the launch of battery-electric variants as early as possible. Following the lead of the Rivian R1T pickup, the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV offer all the full-size utility trucks consumers expect with zero tailpipe emissions.

Expected prices range from $ 40,000 worth of work trucks to six-figure technological wonders. Not all details have been worked out, but here’s what we know about the all-electric versions of America’s best-selling truck for 45 consecutive years and its near-perennial runner-up.

Style

The Silverado EV shares its Ultium platform with the GMC Hummer EV and will only be related to the gasoline-powered Silverado by name. It won’t be as large or as massively heavy as the Hummer EV; the Lightning and Silverado EV weigh around 8,000 lbs. Both trucks will also be available as multi-seat cabins only with short beds. Both trucks have a solid front end with a trunk that lifts off the bumper to optimize storage.

The Silverado EV is about an inch longer than the gasoline model, and Chevrolet claims it will have a larger cabin than any other full-size truck. The EV complements the large blocky ends of the gasoline-powered Silverado, and from the C-pillar to the rear bumper, it takes on avalanche proportions, thanks to its nifty bed storage. The charging port is on the back of the driver’s side, and on the front there is an available light bar squeezes the thin LED DRLs on the bow tie logo.

The F-150 Lightning is a bit longer and taller than the gasoline-powered F-150, but its proportions will appear to be similar. It is based on independent rear suspension, uses a steel-frame body design unique to the Lightning, and the body is made of high-strength aluminum alloy, similar to that of the gasoline F-150. Up front, beyond the charging port in the front fender on the driver’s side, the Lightning’s C-clamp headlights connect a single LED light bar up front. A single light bar spans the tailgate as well, but don’t look for tailpipes below.

Power, range and capacity

Ford has disclosed more specific specs than Chevy, likely because the Lightning is gearing up to roll out of dealerships. The two integrated motors are powered by either a standard 98 kWh battery with a range of 230 miles or a 131 kWh extended range battery with an estimated range of 300 miles. Either pack can create up to 775 lb-ft of torque from the engines, while the standard range generates 426 hp and the larger pack generates 563 hp. The extended-range Lightning hits 60 mph in the “average 4-second range,” according to Ford, which added that it’s faster than a Raptor and has more peak torque than any other F-150. Towing capacity reaches 10,000 lbs and Lightning has a maximum payload of 2,000 lbs.

The Silverado EV Work Truck, or WT, is equipped with front and rear engines that develop 510 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. With standard all-wheel drive and steel suspension, it will be able to tow up to 8,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,200 lbs. Chevrolet did not disclose the battery size in its base model. The RST First Edition top finish which arrives later has more information as its propulsion unit is the same as the First Edition GMC Hummer EV. It develops 664 horsepower and 780 lb-ft, with a 24-module, 200-kWh battery, and its range is estimated at 400 miles. Chevy also cites a 0-60mph time of under 4.5 seconds and a towing capacity of 10,000 lbs, but the payload is significantly less than the Lightning at 1,300 lbs. It will have air suspension with a range of four inches and a steering rear axle.

The Silverado EV’s battery will be able to charge up to 350 kW, which Chevrolet says will add 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. Ford cannot yet match that with the Lightning. On a 150kW DC fast charger, the extended-range version recovers up to 54 miles of range in 10 minutes and goes from 15% to 80% in about 41 minutes, according to Ford.

Bed functionality

Both electric trucks are only offered in a double cab, and the Silverado EV’s 5-foot-11 bed is larger and more versatile. The RST model will also have an interior door that opens to the bed much like the Chevy Avalanche of yore. Opening the 60/40 split middle door in the cabin will allow items up to 9 feet long to fit. Lower the standard Multi-Flex tailgate, raise its rear stopper, and the bed can hold 10ft 10in items.

The F-150 Lightning only comes with a crew cab and a 5-foot-5 bed. The waterproof, drainable luggage rack can hold up to 400 lbs in 14 cubic feet of space, and it has two USB chargers and four power outlets. We expect it to have on-board scales that indicate payload levels in the taillights, like in other newer F-150s.

Auxiliary load

The Lightning can charge household appliances or serve as a back-up home generator. The base versions of the truck get a power of 2.4 kW, while the higher versions Lariat and Platinum get a power of 9.6 kW that can power the refrigerator and lights during a household power outage, and up to with 11 outlets. Ford offers an optional 80-amp home management system to make this happen.

Chevrolet didn’t do the same with the Silverado EV, but the potential is there. The Silverado EV will be available with 10 outlets for charging items at campsites and job sites, including a 240-volt outlet in the bed. It will offer a charging capacity of 10.2 kw and will be able to charge other electric vehicles.

Pricing and availability

Lightning early bird holders can start ordering now, with shipments arriving this spring. Ford announced this week that production of the Lightning will be increased to 150,000 per year to meet demand. This is the second production increase since the initial 40,000 target was announced in the May 2021 reveal. The base 2022 F-150 Lightning Pro with the smaller 98 kWh battery costs $ 41,669. , including destination $ 1,695. It will be sold in Pro, XLT, Lariat and Platinum versions. The high-end Platinum model with the larger 131 kWh standard pack costs $ 92,569.

These prices exclude the federal tax credit available for electric vehicles to which GM is no longer entitled. A credit extension is awaiting Senate approval. By the time Lightning sales increase, cumulative EV sales at Ford will likely have reached at least the first phase of the pullback. GM vehicles are no longer eligible for any portion of the credit.

Starting in spring 2023, the Silverado 2024 EV will be sold only as a WT version, with the larger battery, at a price not yet disclosed. Chevrolet has not disclosed the size of the base model’s battery. In fall 2023, Chevrolet will sell the first premium RST edition for $ 105,000 with the 200 kWh battery and an estimated range of 400 miles. A base WT with a smaller pack will arrive later, for $ 39,900, including the destination. Chevrolet did not disclose production estimates.

Ford is clearly one step ahead of bringing its electric truck to market, but it won’t be the only one and it won’t be for long.
